Oscar’s Story

I first got involved in Democratic politics when I was ten years old. While most kids my age were doing homework or playing outside, I was busy designing flyers for Scott Matheson Jr.’s 2004 campaign for governor. I proudly handed them out to everyone in my neighborhood, driven by a deep belief—even at that young age—in what Democrats could do for families like mine.

My father, Jorge, immigrated to this country from Honduras when he was only 20, seeking an education he could not obtain at home. My mother, Julie, came out as gay in the 1990s in Payson, Utah, when LGBTQ+ Americans lacked legal equality and community acceptance. I got involved with the Democratic Party because I know what it’s like to struggle for acceptance and equality. I’m proud to be a part of a party that prioritizes people like my parents over politics.

Since then, I’ve dedicated myself to the Democratic Party—working on dozens of campaigns, serving as the Executive Director of both the Young Democrats of Utah and Weber County Democratic Party, managing a campaign that flipped a red seat for the first time in a generation, and securing millions of dollars in national resources to support Utah Democrats.

I’ve demonstrated my commitment to Democratic ideals through my work as Dean of Students for DaVinci Academy, where I helped 50% of students graduate with a trade certificate. I’m also proud to have organized Utah’s first Queer Prom, creating a safe and celebratory event for LGTBQ+ individuals. As the owner of a Utah-based rehabilitation center, I facilitate care and support for those facing domestic violence, drug abuse, and mental health crises.

I married my wife, Mariah, in 2024, and we are excited to welcome our first child this March. Becoming a father has only deepened my commitment to making Utah the best it can be for the next generation. With fair districts on the horizon, Utah Democrats need a leader with the mileage and drive to get things done.

That’s why I’m seeking re-election as Vice-Chair of the Utah Democratic Party.
